Jayce McKenzie

Kompany Performer & Admin Assistant

Jayce is a Grant MacEwan Theatre Arts Graduate. She first auditioned for Kompany way back in 2011 in hopes of being a Princess but as it turned out she was not Princess material… However, she still ended up working for Kompany and got to be many other great characters; including but not limited to, a dinosaur, a Goby Fish, a Camp Squealy Moo camper, a train conductor and everyone’s favourite nerdy girl, Mary, from In True Pirate Fashion. She has had many great adventures with lots of wonderful kids while working with Kompany and she looks forward to ever more in the future!

What’s your earliest memory of the theatre?

I can’t really remember a specific moment that sticks out for me with theatre, I can just remember being complete absorbed by it when I first took drama in grade 8. It was the only class that I wished was longer!

What’s been your favourite role with Kompany?

Playing Mary in In True Pirate Fashion because Mary was relatable to lots of teens and I liked doing the workshops with the teens afterwards.

What’s your favourite children’s book?

It’s definitely “The Berenstain Bears and The Spooky Old Tree”. My Grandma used to read to me and I loved doing the repetition parts with her.

What’s your favourite sea creature?

Seals are adorable and I would love to hold one and cuddle it.

What’s your favourite thing to eat?

It’s a tie between pasta and steak. It hasn’t changed since I was 8 years old.

Which would you rather have for a pet: a dog, a cat, a fish, or a bird?

A dog. Because I already have two and if I got any of the other animals my dog would eat them.

Which would you rather have for a pet: a shark, a tiger, an alligator, or a t-rex?

Ooooh. I want to say T-Rex, but that seems very irresponsible. So I’m gonna go with a tiger.

Would you rather live in a medieval castle, a futuristic space station or a Jurassic jungle?

A futuristic space station because that seems the safest.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I would like to go to Disneyland! I went when I was twelve years old, but now I’d finally be tall enough for all the rides!

What’s your favourite memory of working with Kompany?

There’s this audience participation segment in In True Pirate Fashion where the character I’m playing is being bullied and the teens brought up on stage as participants are encouraged by the other actors to join in on the bullying. And they always do the expected thing of playing along. This one particular time, one of the teens shouted and insisted they stop bullying me which ground the scene to a halt. No one had ever stuck up for me like that before. I thought it was very brave of him to do that in front of all the actors, his friends and the whole school.

We know you’re secretly just a very tall 10 year old, but what do you think is something you’ve really carried with you from childhood?

The thrill of making people laugh by acting like a goofball.
